Plans for the New Year
Happy New Year!
New Year's Resolutions and how to eat an Elephant.
I always reserve a little time in January for thinking about the year ahead. What do I hope to achieve? What do i want to be better at?
On a personal note the usual suspects crop up in the New Year's Resolutions, lose weight, exercise more, make more time for family and friends, be more positive, try not to worry about things so much.
Business wise, it's much more complicated and there is a lot more to do. I need to plan few competitions and giveaways, attend more events, design and make more collections of jewellery and gifts, planning blog posts and newsletters, getting to understand Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram, Search engine optimization, Improving the website, adding a shop to the website, adding more content to my YouTube channel, improve my photography, marketing, adverts, ARRGGHHHH!
Panic sets in and more time is spent worrying than achieving things. At times like this I remember a couple things that have been said to me in the past. Firstly from my wife "How do you eat an Elephant? One bite at a time." Not everything needs to be done at once, a bit at a time is how it has to be done. The important thing is to write and re-write lists and make sure you think about the order. Panicking and worrying wastes time. The other saying is "Play to your strengths and hire your weaknesses." I can do most things but get lost or waste too much time on other things, so I shouldn't be afraid to hire someone to do the bits I'm not so good at.
As always, I love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. Content for blog posts, Facebook and emails is always tricky. Do you want to hear about anything in particular? I would quite happily prattle on for pages about re-crystallisation processes in subduction zones or other areas of mineralogy, but I guess you would rather hear about how to clean jewellery.
Also, I need a little help. I want to select a few charities to support this year. This may be through donations of items, fundraising, a donation of profits or something similar.
I have 3 permanent charities that I always support; RNLI, Devon Air Ambulance and ELF, but I need a couple of others to support. Suggestions welcome.
The plans for the year include attending a few more events, a few giveaways and competitions, putting together a few more collections of jewellery, expanding my gift range, planning blog posts and newsletters, getting to understand and effectively use Facebook, twitter, Pinterest and Instagram and putting a little more content on my Youtube channel to name a few.
When you look at it, it's a mammoth task and this is on top of all the day to day workings of running a business.
