9ct gold Nautical flag brooch by J.W. Barrett of Birmingham Hallmarked in 1954. I absolutely love these kind of pieces. On this one the flags spell out a name, Sally. From top to bottom it reads S-A-L-Repeat-Y. These were often used to spell out different messages and some were a bit naughty such as "permission to lie along side" and "my bottom needs inspecting" but this one is much more respectable. This one measures approximately 32mm (1 7/8") long in total. Each piece of this type has a lot of hours invested in it. Every brooch was different, using different amounts of letters, different pennant shapes and each enamel painstakingly fired, painted and fired again. Miniature masterpieces really. I had the pleasure of dealing with this firm when they were still in business and know it often took as much as 8 weeks for a piece to arrive, all finished. There are some minor scratches and marks to the gold and enamel as you may expect.
All vintage items have been worn and loved before they find their next owner, so they should always be worn or used with a little more care than a brand new piece. Some minor scratches are normal. All vintage pieces I sell have been thoroughly cleaned and lightly polished when required. If repairs are needed before it's offered for sale, they are completed sympathetically. Thank you for looking and please have a look around the other items in my shop.
