A pair of Victorian, Sterling silver Table or serving spoons, hallmarked in Exeter, 1862.

A very nicely looked after pair of Sterling Silver serving spoons made by the Bristol Silversmiths, James and Josiah Williams. This Old English Fiddle pattern spoon was hallmarked in Exeter as there was no Assay office in Bristol at that time. This was made exactly 20 years before the Exeter assay office closed its doors for the last time in 1882.

The spoons measure approximately 230 mm (9") long and weigh approximately 158 grams in total. The handles are sight engraved with a griffins head, which in itself would cost a fair amount to do today. The assay marks Include the Sterling Silver Lion Passant, Exeter Castle assay mark, "JW & JW" makers mark, date letter and the duty mark of Queen Victoria's head.

All vintage items have been worn and loved before they find their next owner, so they should always be worn or used with a little more care than a brand new piece. Some minor scratches are normal. All vintage pieces I sell have been thoroughly cleaned and lightly polished when required. If repairs are needed before it's offered for sale, they are completed sympathetically.
