*Britannia Silver was introduced in 1697 by William III. This as a reaction to the practice of "coin clipping", where naughty silversmiths would trim the edges off coins to use as a material for silversmithing. When Britannia (95.84% pure) was brought in The Sterling (92.5%) Silver from coins was not able to be used for silverware.

These are entirely handmade with planishing marks to the surface giving a delicate finish. Each one varies slightly in size and shape but are closely matched for hand raised vessels. A beautiful set.

Very unusual to find a set of this quantity and handmade. There is no box or case for these, they will come simply wrapped.

Colonel John Montague Perreau, of the North Staffordshire Regiment, was an amateur silversmith working to a high standard. There are few examples of his work in general circulation, let alone as complete a set as this. Considering he was not regarded as a professional silversmith, he was very accomplished and able to produce a matching set of hand raised cups.
